Frequently Asked Questions

What is Microcement Microtopping?

Microcement Microtopping is a thin, versatile material that can cover all kinds of surfaces, from walls to floors to furniture. No matter the application, microcement is ideal for those wanting to create a seamless, tactile surface to make any environment stand out.

Does microcement come in different colours?

The beauty of Ideal Work’s Microcement Microtopping®, as used by Polished Concrete Interiors, is the ability for it to be dyed to obtain a combination of colours. Both the shade and intensity can be varied depending on the amount of dye used. As experts in the field, we can provide you with examples based on the colour you have in mind.

Can I use microcement to create different effects?

Not only will you be able to customise the colour of the material, you can also create polished, silky, cloudy and acid stain effects. Alternatively, you have the option to use decorative inserts to personalise your finish and create a unique, head-turning look.

If you are looking for a different finish to your surfaces, you’re able to choose between shiny, opaque, satin or natural looks. We’re happy to advise on the most suitable finish for your project depending on your desires.

Where can I use microcement?

With a thickness of only 3mm, the applications of microcement are incredibly versatile. At Polished Concrete Interiors, we have experience in applying Microcement Microtopping® to floors, walls, columns, bathrooms, wet rooms, splashbacks, worktops, furniture and hypoallergenic environments. No matter the environment, microcement can create a luxurious, modern atmosphere.

Can I change the colour of the surfaces once created?

Of course! This would simply mean we would come back, sand the surface of the microcement and reapply the material, using the dye of your choice. This would mean you could have a different floor every year if you wanted to!

How do I keep my microcement surface clean?

One of the great things about microcement surfaces is that they are incredibly low maintenance. A damp cloth is more than sufficient to clean your areas, and floors only require a little neutral detergent.

Detergents based on soap, acid, ammonia, chlorine or abrasive detergents are absolutely prohibited. We recommend to only use non-aggressive, neutral PH detergents.

Can microcement be scratched?

Like all surfaces, scratches are possible when they come into contact with sharp objects, and these scratches will be most obvious when on a smooth, shiny surface. Heavy objects falling on the material can also mark your flooring. In the instance your surface does get scratched, there are extraordinary maintenance works that can be carried out, restoring your floor to perfection.

Alternatively, we would recommend going for a tactile, opaque finish to avoid scratches being obvious.

How can I maintain the appearance of my surfaces?

  1. Regular sweeping or vacuuming will remove any abrasive particles, but ensure to use the brush settings on your vacuum to avoid scratching your floor.
  2. Provide a doormat at the entry of your home to avoid walking dust and other abrasive particulars onto your micocement floor.
  3. Using protective felt under the contact points of your furniture will protect against scratches.
  4. When moving heavy furniture, place a protective cloth under the item to avoid lines being scratched into your surface.
  5. Always use nylon sheets or cardboard etc. to protect your flooring when carrying out any painting, decorating, plumbing or moving jobs.

Does it stain?

Although the resin treatments we can provide do offer protection from spillages, please be aware that there is potential for all liquid substances to stain your floor if not eliminated very quickly. Ice cream, wine, oils, vinegar and coffee are some examples to watch out for.

Is microcement water-resistant?

Absolutely! Microcement is the ideal protection against water penetration, making it perfect for bathroom, wetroom, sink basins and shower applications.

Can it be used outside?

The resistance microcement Microtopping has against water, climatic stress, de-icing salts and UV rays means it can easily be applied in outside settings. Some examples of where the material can be used include garages, terraces, footpaths, porches, BBQ’s and walls.

Can I restore floors and walls without taking out existing doors and windows?

The 3mm thickness of Ideal Work’s microcement Microtopping® means your fittings can stay in place when restoring your floors and walls!

Does the flooring work with underfloor heating?

Yes! Microcement has a heat conductivity value of λ =0.46, making it suitable for underfloor heating systems.

Is it safe for health?

Microcement has undergone intensive testing, and after the application and drying process, does not release any harmful substances into the air making it ideal for family homes.

How long does it take to create a surface in microcement?

Of course, the time taken to complete a project depends on its size and complexity. However, with a skilled team like Polished Concrete Interiors, you can expect it to take roughly 1 week to create 100m2.

Will it support cars and other heavy items?
